One of the major responsibilities of mine at Galco is illustrating and assembling technical documents, internally referred to as ‘PIGs’ (Product Information Guides), that detail proper wear, care and use of our products. It’s important for these to be as clear and accurate as possible, especially when the end user has such a varying degree of experience. As such, while previous illustrators had commonly used hand drawn methods to different degrees of success, I opted to partner my photography and illustration skills and illustrate over product photos in order to guarantee accuracy.
While instruction manuals and associated documents are certainly not the most thrilling design project, I find technical illustrations to be extremely satisfying as an undertaking. There’s something nice about briefly removing the subjective opinion of art and stepping into a space where accuracy is king. My product illustrations were paired with slightly stylized ‘mannequin’ figures to wear them.
